What is XEQT?
XEQT is the iShares Core Equity ETF Portfolio, an asset-allocation ETF that holds several underlying iShares equity funds in one wrapper. It is 100% stocks, diversified across Canada, the United States, developed international markets and emerging markets, and it rebalances automatically. Many Canadian do-it-yourself investors use it as a simple core holding in a TFSA, RRSP or non-registered account.
How the XEQT return is calculated here
The calculator uses XEQT's dividend-adjusted monthly closing price in Canadian dollars as a total-return proxy, so distributions are treated as reinvested. You can switch to price-only to see growth without dividends. Management fees are already reflected in the fund price, but trading commissions, foreign withholding tax and personal taxes are not modelled.
A short history
XEQT launched in August 2019, so the available history is much shorter than for the S&P 500 or TSX. That window includes the 2020 pandemic crash, the rapid recovery, the 2022 rate-driven decline and the rebound that followed. A short sample like this says little about what a full market cycle might look like, so treat the numbers as a snapshot rather than a forecast.
Dollar-cost averaging into XEQT
Because XEQT bundles global stocks into one fund, a monthly contribution plan is easy to automate. The calculator adds your deposit each month, optionally raising it with Canadian CPI, so you can see how regular buying behaved through the 2020 and 2022 drawdowns compared with investing a lump sum at the start.
XEQT compared with the S&P 500 and TSX
XEQT spreads risk across regions, while the S&P 500 is U.S. only and the TSX is concentrated in financials and energy. Over any given stretch, one of them will lead. The Key facts table compares XEQT with the S&P 500 and TSX Composite over the same period, in CAD, so you can see the difference in return and in inflation-adjusted purchasing power.
How to use this page
Leave the prefilled values to see a ten thousand dollar start plus five hundred dollars a month, or set a lump sum only. Change the dates, switch assets or toggle inflation-adjusted contributions. Results are historical, based on an ETF proxy, exclude taxes and trading costs, and are not advice or a forecast.
